About Janet

Marketing your small business can seem like a full-time job.

That’s where I come in.

I love helping entrepreneurs and small business owners grow their businesses by taking many of the mundane, day-to-day marketing tasks off their to-do list.

A copywriter and editor for over 10 years, I also design e-books, landing pages, lead magnets and social media graphics and manage WordPress websites. My print design work includes brochures, annual reports, programs, cookbooks and book covers.

I’ve worn many hats in my 30+ years in the workforce. I’m at my happiest when helping others succeed.

After six years working alongside the VP of Broadcasting at The Canadian Press and eight years serving as assistant to the president of a local medium-sized business, I opened Second Glance Writing Services in 2004 and began helping small businesses across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area.

As my client base grew, I found that writing and editing copy was just a small part of what my clients needed to push their businesses forward. In 2009, after editing and designing the first of eight cookbooks in The Fridge Whisperer Cookbook Series, I began designing websites and print materials. While serving as vice-president of the Ontario Writers’ Conference (OWC), I expanded my portfolio further with the design of OWC programs, brochures and conference handouts.

Combining my writing and editing skills with my desire to design seemed like a natural transition. It also came at just the right time: while my clients’ businesses were growing, their available workforce was not. And although social media provided a valuable way for them to market their expanding businesses, they lacked the expertise and time to manage it effectively. Blogs and regular e-newsletters, now the norm for well-staffed large companies, seemed out of reach for many small-to-medium-sized businesses without the time or employees to manage them. Using my years of writing and editing experience, paired with a keen eye-for-detail and love of design, I added social media management to my list of offerings.

In November 2016, I decided to follow my passion for helping others and expand the services I offer my clients by rebranding as a creative virtual assistant.
